Napa Valley Pre-Climb Tune-Up for the Yosemite Climb

 Five PAF climbers on the Yosemite Cancer Climb, Trek and Gathering for Prostate Awareness expedition in August did a three day hike and camp in the Napa Valley in late July. The highlight was an 8 hour hike thru some of the most rugged terrain we have ever hiked in. The temperature was over 100 degrees and we were confronted by rattle snakes along the way. 
Looming over the town of Calistoga located at the North end of California's Napa Valley vineyards is a rugged volcanic escarpment known as The Palisades. The center of the 3 parts of the trail, winds along the base of the rocky outcroppings, dipping into 3 large "amphitheaters" or scallops shaping the Palisades' 3.6 mile length. The trail is not for the faint-hearted, particularly in Summer where 90* + temperatures are common. It is narrow, somewhat level, with rock steps frequently encountered, and frequent sections where the trail is little more than footholds in the hillside. This video will give you an indication of what you will encounter if you are planning a Palisades hike."

Cooking Oil Flash Points

Cooking oils become carcinogenic when they smoke, this is called the flashpoint. We know that olive oil is the most Prostate friendly oil, but it's flashpoint is relatively low. We recently read that avacado oil has one of the highest at 520 degrees. Below is a picture taken in Armstrong Redwoods Park in Guerneville  CA the site of last weeks PAF Wednesday hike.

Prostate Awareness Foundation Summer 2014 Hiking Schedule

You are cordially invited to participate in the Prostate Awareness Foundation's 

weekly Bay Area hikes. We have changed the day of the week to Wednesday's by popular request. Most of the hikes will take place in Marin County with occasional hikes taking place in Sonoma County. All hikes will begin at 10:00 and last between 4 and 5 hours. Terrain varies but generally the hikes will be of a moderate nature. You do not have to have prostate problems to participate, women are also welcome. Those men who have consistent exercise programs seem to have the slowest prostate cancer disease progression! These hike are a great way to meet those of a similar interest and to get in shape and pro-actively take care of yourself. Bring your own snacks water and lunch for the trail. High Cost of Therapy

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1995 brachytherapy (seed implant radiation) was a new option. One of it's advantages was it's lower average cost compared to radical prostatectomy. $13,000 compared to $30,000. We heard from a guy lately that was billed $300,000 for a seed implant procedure and he has no insurance! There is something very wrong here. Let's call it what it is -- GREED

Hiking in the Northern Sierra's

 Last week 4 PAF members Tim Englert, Walter Radtke, Dennis Nichols and Ken Malik camped and hiked around Sierra  City on the Sierra Buttes. We are in training for the August Cancer Climb, trek & Gathering for Prostate Awareness to the Yosemite High Country. There wasn't much snow or water in the creeks, but it was still a great trip. Costanoa Camp hike and bike

Six of us had a great time down on the San Mateo Coast a few weeks back. we took advantage of a San Francisco Chronicle article by Tom Steinstra and he claims that the hike and bike that we did at Big Basin State Park is his favorite in the United States. I can vouch for that. We rode in six miles on fairly easy terrain. Then locked up our bikes and did a three waterfall eight mile loop back to the bikes. Wild flowers galore, lots of water. We all slept well that night in camp. This is becoming an annual PAF spring event.
